Miss Universe Japan Bashed For Not Being ‘Japanese Enough’

After Ariana Miyamoto was crowned Miss Universe Japan, citizens of the country flocked to social media to express their rather harsh opinions about the multiracial beauty representing their country.
The daughter of a Japanese woman and an African-American man, Ariana Miyamoto, 20, was scrutinized by many after winning the coveted pageant title. See some of the rude remarks being said about Miss Universe Japan below.

Many unhappy citizens of Japan bashed Ariana saying she did not look “Japanese” enough to be the winner of the pageant — crazy, right?!
Ariana was forced to defend herself during her first meeting with the Japanese media after she was crowned. She said she may not “look Japanese” on the outside, but on the inside, her soul is replete with Japaneseness, according to Kotaku.
Here are some of the harsh comments on Twitter about Ariana, translated into English:
“Is it ok to choose a haafu to represent Japan? Sometimes the criteria which they use to select Miss Universe is a bit of a mystery”
“Even though she’s Miss Universe Japan, her face is foreign no matter how you look at it!”

Ariana is considered haafu, which basically means multiracial in Japanese culture.
