Friends and family are mourning a 13-year-old surf star who died
following a shark attack on Sunday.
NBC reports Elio Canestri was surfing with
a group off the coast of the island of Reunion in the Indian Ocean.
Elio was reportedly pulled off his board by a shark less than 50 feet off the
coast. The details of his injuries are especially horrifying:
“Elio was surfing
with seven others off the west coast of the island on Sunday morning when a
shark attacked, a spokesman for the island's rescue services agency told NBC
News. The shark sunk its teeth into the teen's stomach and flung him around the
water as he prepared to mount a wave” the spokesman added.
Elio's death shocked
the surfing community, as professional surfers like Jeremy Flores expressed
their sadness.
Hundreds of mourners turned out for a
memorial on Les Aigrettes beach
on Monday as well.
NBC reports there have been 16 shark
attacks in the waters off Reunion during the past four years, with seven of
them ending up as fatalities.
