Anne Meara, actress, comedian, wife of Jerry Stiller and mother
of Ben Stiller, has died at age 85.
In a statement, Ben Stiller's representative confirmed the news:
"The Stiller family is deeply saddened to share the beloved Anne Meara
passed away last night at the age of 85. She is survived by her husband and
partner in life Jerry Stiller. The two were married for 61 years and worked
together almost as long."
"Anne's memory lives on in the hearts of daughter Amy, son
Ben, her grandchildren, her extended family and friends, and the millions she
entertained as an actress, writer and comedienne."
One half of the comedy duo Meara and Stiller, Anne Meara gained
fame in the 1960s, appearing on The Ed Sullivan Show and The
Tonight Show alongside her husband. She then went on to appear
in a long list of TV and film shows, with recurring roles in Rhoda and Archie
Bunker's Place earning her 5 Emmy nominations. The
younger generation will know her best as Steve's mother in Sex
and the City.
Alongside
her son Ben Stiller, Meara is survived by her daughter Amy, her husband and
comedic partner Jerry, and several grandchildren. Our thoughts are with her
family in this difficult time.
