The country's film censors decided the raunchy S&M flick was too explicit for India's film-hungry audiences – even after all nudity was edited out of the film.
A source at Universal Pictures said Indian film censors had also objected to some of the film's steamy dialogue.
In India films can be banned if they violate public order, decency or morality and are likely to incite people to commit an offence.
Malaysia, Indonesia and Kenya have also banned the controversial film.
Malaysian censors said the film was "more like pornography than a movie" and contained "scenes that are not of a natural sexual content".
The film – starring Jamie Dornan as Christian Grey and Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steel – is the highest grossing 18-rated film in UK box office history, bringing in at least £262million worldwide since it premiered last month.
Meanwhile internet searches for "submission" and "dominate" have gone up by over 40 percent on adult website PornHub, with women racking up the most kinky searches.
PornHub said: "Suffice it to say, our female users have definitely been channeling their inner Anastasia Steeles."
