Child being tested for STDs after thinking a used condom was a balloon

An 8-year-old boy is facing a year of STD tests after mistaking a used condom for a balloon and trying to blow it up, KTTV Los Angeles reports. A teacher caught the boy with the condom in his mouth and had him quickly wash his hands and rinse out his mouth, but unfortunately the condom was thrown out before it could be tested for diseases.
He's looking at around 12 months of screenings to make sure he didn't contract anything, but the school refuses to pay for it, despite the fact that it happened on their watch. "He's at risk for HIV, hepatitis C, herpes, gonorrhea, chlamydia," the child's mother said. " I mean, this is just an unbelievable tragedy. They will not pay for it because it's taxpayers money and I feel like I'm a taxpayer. So, I mean, this is my son and they failed to protect him."
The school did say the incident was "regrettable" and will be adding more security cameras around the school. They'll also make sure the grounds are looked over more often so this won't happen again.
