Sunderland have sacked manager Gus Poyet after a dismal sequence of results left the club fearing for their Premier League future
The Uruguayan has left the club after 18 months in charge. He goes having managed only one win in 2015 - and one win in 12 games - with the Black Cats fourth bottom of the Premier League standings, one point above Burnley in the relegation places.
Poyet was apparently told of his dismissal after training on Monday. He met chief executive Margeret Byrne and fellow board members afterwards.
Sunderland released a statement confirming the news: "Sunderland AFC have parted company with head coach Gus Poyet this afternoon.
"The club would like to place on record its’ thanks to Gus and wishes him well for the future.
Chairman Ellis Short said: “I would like to thank Gus for his endeavours during his time at the club, in particular last season’s ‘great escape’ and (league) cup final appearance, which will live long in the memory of every Sunderland fan.
