Just days after winning in the boxing ring against
Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather has to face a another fight - against his
ex-girlfriend, who filed a defamation lawsuit against him.
Josie Harris, who is the mother of three of
Mayweather's children, filed the lawsuit Tuesday claiming that in a recent
interview with Katie Couric, the fighter lied about her being on drugs during a
2010 domestic violence incident.
She's asking for $20million in damages after
Mayweather told Couric that he was trying to hold Harris back during the
September 2010 altercation because she was on drugs.
The boxing great, who received $100million from his fight on Saturday, was
arrested after police said he punched Harris in his Las Vegas home, where the
couple were living with three children.
Fourteen months after the incident, he pleaded
guilty to a reduced charge of misdemeanor battery and two counts of harassment,
according to CNN. Though the
5-foot-8 boxer was sentenced to three months in prison, he served two.
Harris claims that Mayweather began punching and
kicking her as she slept on a couch in the home and dragged her around the
house in front of the children, according to the lawsuit. Mayweather, who is undefeated in his 48-match
career, has denied beating his ex-girlfriend in the past.
'Did I kick, stomp, and beat someone? No, that
didn't happen... Did I restrain a woman that was on drugs? Yes, I did,' he told
Couric last month. 'So if they say that's domestic
violence, then, you know what? I'm guilty. I'm guilty of restraining
someone.
Harris filed the lawsuit, claiming defamation,
intentional infliction of emotional distress and negligent infliction of
emotional distress, on Tuesday in Los Angeles County. The lawsuit claims
that after the early-morning incident Harris went to the hospital, suffering
cuts and deep bruises, and was treated for head, facial and bodily injuries.
She denies being a drug addict or abuser in the
lawsuit and her attorney said that 'It was not Mayweather's
"restraint" of Harris that caused her serious injuries, rather it was
his beating of her'.
Mayweather has a long history of domestic violence,
having been arrested for other scuffles with Harris, according to ESPN.
