Man Stops Girlfriend from Driving Drunk By Jumping in Front of The Car and Smashing Window

A New Jersey man jumped in front of his girlfriend's car, punched through the window, and yanked the keys from the ignition to keep her from driving drunk, police say.

Melanie Podhayny, 27, of Dumont, was allegedly drunk when she tried to drive down Chestnut Street after leaving a party with her 25-year-old boyfriend early Sunday, The Bergen Record reports.

The boyfriend, whose name has not been made public, jumped in front of the woman's car prompting her to stop.

He then punched through the driver's-side window and yanked the keys from the ignition, cutting his right arm on the glass in the process, NBC reports.

Officers responded to the scene art around 1.30am after receiving a report of a loud house party and people yelling in the street, Lt. Vincent Tamburro told the Record.

The couple was taken to a local hospital for injuries from the broken glass, according to the Record. Podhayny was given a blood test to determine her blood alcohol content. The results have not been made public.

The 27-year-old was charged with careless driving and driving while intoxicated, the Record reports.
